The Tower was originally constructed almost one thousand years ago and was added to over the centuries. Originally a Royal Palace and Fortress it still houses the Crown Jewels of England, visited by thousands of tourists every year. It also served as a prison for many notables over the years, the best known being Mary Queen of Scots before her execution on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I.
